We're already in the communications revolution, and when that really hits the upcoming energy revolution, i.e., green tech, renewables, etc.; it will merge together and manifest as a social revolution. The social revolution will likely make governance and business more free-distribution-oriented, and will largely be driven by automation.
Although automation will "steal people's jobs", it will be used to provide an abundance of goods and services to the people for free ... because the people will make it so. The 1% will have limited power during and after the revolution. In fact, the 1% will likely join the 99% due to the logic inherent in the new production/distribution system, as well as the fact that the 1% will also have the same access to the necessities of life as anyone else. In fact, they'll potentially have access to much more than even their life as a billionaire could provide. But that's an aside. The consequence is that there will be a shrinking of the money system, as people will no longer require it to acquire what they need in life.
From the social revolution - and aided by technological automation - the people will start to implement and use more cooperative-type business models, and they will go directly to the physical resources, in order to produce social projects that have intrinsic benefits for society as a whole. These cooperative business models will mostly bypass the money market systems as much as possible. Again, those who currently 'own' the physical resources of the world will likely relinquish their control for a multitude of reasons. Ever wondered how much of a burden it must be to control entire resource deposits? Especially if the motivation to do so is essentially lost when all your human needs are already being met?
It's at this stage when the question will arise: "Do we have the resources and technology to do x, y or z project?" instead of the arbitrary "Do we have enough money?" The idea is that millions of unpaid workers (including you and me?) will work on these types of gargantuan projects together, for no monetary incentive. All workers and all people in general, will be provided with the necessities of life for free, through the use of automated systems. So what is their incentive? Their incentive to work will hopefully be based on an intrinsic motivation to the project at hand - i.e., they will have a genuine interest and motivation to bring the transnational evacuated tube train concept or skyscraper farms, etc., into reality. And these will be just two of thousands of technological wonders that will be made as a transition to a highly advanced, civilized and moneyless world.
