The Zeitgeist Movement Greek Chapter - Press Release regarding the events on 12/2/2012 in Greece

It is more than obvious the failure of the economic system which cannot meet the needs of the general population. Nevertheless, we see that often we focus our attention and let loose our anger on individuals, certain behaviors or institutions as the main cause of the problems we face. We talk about corrupt political entities, corporate greed, evil banks etc.

We will have to slowly start questioning whether these in fact constitute the true root causes and are not merely symptoms of a backward and obsolete socioeconomic system.

Could we expect anything different other than a permanent class division and an ever-growing economic inequality, given the monetary system where money is created through debt-based loans, and in order for them to be paid off we are forced to participate in the intrinsically parasitic competition for access to the ever-scarce money supply?
In essence we live under a condition of modern feudalism and nothing less.

Could we expect anything different other than rampant corruption, environmental degradation, human exploitation and products designed with deliberate obsolescence, when the profit motive is what reinforces these behaviors?
Social and environmental concerns are merely trivial secondary priorities in any form of monetary economics.

Should we start questioning the dominant values of blind individualism, over-consumption and unfailing tendency for wealth consolidation which constitute the guidance of our life, and consider to what extent are they truly sustainable in relation to our long-term survival on the planet?

How can we stop such a destructive system when the "weapons" (mass media and money) are at its disposal?
The power of the ruling class which is wielded upon a population is proportionate to its participation in the established socioeconomic game.
There is no reason to maintain this game anymore.

We can do two things to achieve such a goal:
- Civil disobedience: Non participation in the processes of the current socioeconomic system.
- Initiation of implementing a sustainable system: Take initiative and creatively participate in collective actions and projects that will evolve toward the creation of a truly sustainable society.

"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."
― Richard Buckminster Fuller

The Zeitgeist Movement is a global sustainability activist group working to bring the world together for the common goal of species sustainability before it is too late. It is a social movement, not a political one, with over 1,100 chapters across nearly all countries. Divisive notions such as nations, governments, races, political parties, religions, creeds or class are non-operational distinctions in the view of the movement. Rather, we recognize the world as one system and the human species as a singular organism, sharing a common habitat. Our overarching intent could be summarized as the application of the scientific method to social, economic and environmental concern.
